On October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I and the Space 
Age began. The 84 kilogram capsule orbited the earth every 96 
minutes until early 1958, when it fell from orbit. Other Sputnik missions 
tested life-support systems and reentry strategies while bringing back 
information about space.
